Exploration work on the project started in 2017 and ended with the beginning of 2018. The Ministry of Transport and Maritime Navigation also cooperated with a large number of institutions, including the Ministries of Environment, Forestry, Water, Food, Agriculture, Livestock, Energy and Human Resources.

In addition to the Istanbul Municipality and the Department of collective housing "Toki" of the Turkish Prime Minister.

During the designation of the canal route, the Ministry of Transport also hired a large number of Turkish and international experts.

The Ministry of Transport has drawn up a preliminary plan for the project. The soils that were produced from digging the canal is to be used to construct industrial islands in the Marmara Sea and fill the coal mine.

It was found during the preparation of the preliminary scheme of the project that the channel will not suffer any adverse effects due to the possibility of seismic tsunami 

In the preparation of the chart, the statistics of wind blowing for the next 25 years were taken into consideration. Storms and deep waves in the Black Sea and Marmara were studied.
